課程概述

This course aims to introduce students to a number of fiction from the late-eighteenth century to the early-nineteenth century. All the novels discussed in this course are written by women writers, including the more well-known writers as well as the marginalized ones. We will begin with the earliest novel on the list, and end with Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility (1811). This course will explore the use of language/representations and consider the implications of the French Revolution and political turbulence in these novels.

* * * Detailed arrangement of this course will be discussed in the first week of classes, so students MUST attend the first class if they wish to remain on the student list. 

課程目標
 This course hopes to introduce students to some of the best novels by British women writers in this period. By the end of this course, students will acquire knowledge of key aspects of writing of this period. Students will be able to relate these novels to their historical and cultural contexts, and to develop familiarity with the concept of a female literary tradition.

 This course will be conducted in both English and Mandarin (when necessary).

 Attendance 
10% 
 Students are expected to attend classes, for participation is key to becoming a member of a learning community. Absence is allowed when students have a reasonable excuse for their absence (illness or family emergencies). In this case, please email the instructor prior to class.

 Participation in class 
15% 
 Students are expected to participate in class discussions and activities, and to share their thoughts with the class.  
3. 
 Group presentation 
15% 
 During the semester, students are required to deliver a group presentation (of 20-25 mins) on specific authors/themes. Topics will be assigned to each group in the first class. Students will be assigned based on mutual interest. Each group should have about 5-6 students, depending on the final class size. Everyone in the group should work together and participate in the delivering of the presentation. 
4. 
 Quizzes 
20% 
 There will be a number of unannounced small quizzes during course of the semester, in order to ensure that students read the assigned novels before class. The quizzes should not be difficult for students who read the assigned texts before class. These quizzes will be given at the beginning of the class period. No make-up quizzes will be allowed. 
5. 
 Final exam 
40% 
 Students need to take one final exam (which accounts for 40% of their final grades) on 26th June. This will be an open-book exam (only novels are allowed; notes and other materials should not be used during exam). No make-up exam will be allowed unless reasonable excuse is provided beforehand.
